After 15 days of testimony from 20 witnesses, the Manhattan district attorney’s office on Monday rested its case against Donald J. Trump. The case was capped by three days of grinding cross-examination of his former fixer, Michael D. Cohen, who finally stepped off the stand on Monday afternoon, leaving jurors to weigh the truthfulness of the prosecution’s star witness. The defense began its case on a mission to sully his credibility, but the second witness Mr. Trump’s lawyers called to the stand quickly became embroiled in a squabble with the judge, Juan M. Merchan. The judge, not surprisingly, prevailed. Though the defense is expected to be brief, Justice Merchan said that closing arguments would not happen until next week.

Peloton shares plunged on Monday after the connected fitness company said it is launching a "global refinancing," as it looks to stave off a cash crunch amid falling sales. Peloton plans to use the proceeds to buy back about $800 million of its 0% convertible senior notes, which are currently due in 2026, and refinance its existing term loan. Shares fell more than 12% in extended trading after Peloton announced the refinancing, but later regained some ground. In a letter to shareholders, the company said it is "mindful" of the timing of its debt maturities, which include convertible notes and a term loan. "Overall, our refinancing goals are to deleverage and extend maturities at a reasonable blended cost of capital," the company said.

Nearly eight weeks after the container ship Dali rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, efforts were underway on Monday to move it back to a berth in the Port of Baltimore. The operation appeared to be off to a slow start, with five tugboats surrounding the giant ship but no official word that the move was underway an hour after its anticipated 5:30 a.m. start. The bridge collapsed on impact, killing six workers doing repairs on the bridge roadway, clogging the waterway with around 50,000 tons of metal and debris, and disrupting the commerce of one of the nation’s key shipping hubs. The salvage and recovery operation has involved more than a thousand workers and scores of barges, cranes, helicopters and Coast Guard cutters. Authorities set a goal of reopening that channel by the end of May.

OpenAI announced it would pull one of the ChatGPT voices named "Sky" after it created controversy for its resemblance to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson in "Her," a movie about artificial intelligence. "We've heard questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT, especially Sky," the Microsoft -backed company posted on X. The news comes one week after OpenAI debuted a range of audio voices for ChatGPT, its viral chatbot, a new AI model called GPT-4o, and a desktop version of ChatGPT. Users watching the live demonstration of ChatGPT's audio capabilities immediately began to post on social media that the "Sky" voice sounded like Johansson in the movie. "Sky's voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice," the company wrote.

Johannesburg, South Africa CNN —South Africa’s apex court has ruled that former president Jacob Zuma is not eligible to run for parliament in next week’s critical general election. He was found guilty of contempt of court by the same constitutional court for his refusal to testify to an anti-corruption commission. It is that sentence that barred him from running, the court ruled on Monday. A contempt of court sentence is an extremely important sentence, and it is a sentence that cannot be treated lightly. While the court ruled that Zuma is not eligible to run for MP, his party will still contest the election and his face will remain on the ballot.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, at the U.K. Jamie Dimon's days as CEO of JPMorgan Chase are numbered — though its unclear by how much. In a response to a question Monday about the bank's succession planning, Dimon indicated that his expected tenure is less than five more years. That's a key change from Dimon's previous responses to succession questions, in which his standard answer had been that retirement was perpetually five years away. Even when he steps down as CEO, however, it's likely he will stay on as the bank's chairman, JPMorgan has said.

Walmart's chief people officer, Donna Morris, commented similarly in a memo announcing the layoffs and relocations earlier that week. She wrote that working in an office would help workers collaborate, innovate, and "move even faster." Still, some employees continued working remotely, and several satellite offices remained open in cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Toronto, and Seattle. He also said he doesn't think the company is using this RTO mandate as a cover for achieving cost savings through workforce reductions, commonly referred to as "quiet firing," but that it's more part of Walmart's ethos. For the remote worker BI spoke with, the next few weeks will be filled with uncertainty.

Mr. Keys and his wife, Charae Williams Keys, were getting into their car after a Father’s Day visit in 2021 with her grandparents in a leafy neighborhood near Walnut Hill Park in Columbus, Ohio. A 72-year-old neighbor carrying a rifle accosted them in the belief, he later told the police, that Mr. Keys had let the air out of his daughter’s tires and poisoned his lawn. It took a moment for everyone to realize that the shots had come from a fourth gun across the street. Elias Smith, a 24-year-old ex-Marine, had stepped to his front door with a so-called ghost gun, an AR-style rifle that Mr. Smith had assembled from parts ordered online. Within seconds, he opened fire, hitting Mr. Keys five times.

The Constitutional Court later overturned his medical parole, but Mr. Zuma then received a presidential pardon from his successor-turned-political rival, Mr. Ramaphosa. While he was granted a remission that reduced his time in prison, he had been sentenced to 15 months, which made him ineligible to run, the court decided. According to South African law, a person who has been convicted of an offense and sentenced to more than 12 months in prison cannot serve in the National Assembly. “It is declared that Mr. Zuma was convicted of an offense and sentenced to more than 12 months’ imprisonment,” Justice Leona Theron said. Mr. Zuma is not “eligible and not qualified” to stand for election until five years after the completion of his sentence, the justice added.

Iran sought to project a sense of order and control on Monday by quickly naming an acting president and foreign minister a day after a helicopter crash killed both leaders. The change in leadership came at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East and domestic discontent in Iran, where many residents have called for an end to decades of repressive clerical rule. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, announced five days of mourning for the president, Ebrahim Raisi, 63, and the foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, 60, who died when their helicopter plunged into a mountainous area near the Iranian city of Jolfa. The men had been returning from Iran’s border with Azerbaijan after inaugurating a joint dam project. He had been widely viewed as a possible successor to Ayatollah Khamenei, 85.
